Archive preservation is part of the processing of static archives, namely the process of controlling static archives in an efficient, effective and systematic manner including acquisition, processing, preservation, utilization, utilization and other activities in business or government organizations. In archive preservation, there are 2 methods that can be used:
Archive restoration is an effort to save damaged archives. This restoration process is carried out as much as possible in order to restore the archive so that it can resemble its original form. Thus, the information or data contained in it can be saved and reused for the benefit of agencies or companies.
In certain conditions, archive restoration also involves the process of adding new material to get maximum results and is similar to damaged archives. So it can be said that archive restoration is a method or step used to repair damaged archives or documents.
The requirements needed to restore archives are: archives that can be repaired are paper archives damaged by the impact of a disaster, for example damage caused by floods, earthquakes or landslides. Not all documents can be restored, the category of archives that can be restored is archives that are damaged or lost due to natural disasters. Several types of archives such as family cards, diplomas, marriage certificates, ID cards, and other important family documents can be restored. Meanwhile for companies, various types of archives can actually be restored, except for vital company records which according to Article 1 Paragraph 4 of Law Number 43 of 2009 concerning Archives cannot be updated or replaced if they are damaged or lost. Archives to be restored have certain criteria related to the level of damage which includes mild, moderate and severe damage. Several types of archives that are categorized as non-restoreable and returned to the user, namely:
If your archive does not fall into the category above, then you can proceed with archive restoration actions. For companies, an additional fee will be charged. Some ways to restore archives include:
o Cleaning dirt on archives, namely the process of removing dirt, mold, and other factors that damage archives. To remove stains that stick to the paper and leave marks such as paint and oil stains, Benzene solution will be used.
o Deacidification, the process of neutralizing acids that are damaging the paper by providing a buffer to protect the paper from the effects of acids coming from outside. This archive restoration method can only remove stains, not strengthen paper that is already brittle under the influence of acids.
o Patching and connecting, is done to fill in holes or missing parts in the archive or put back together archives that were torn due to various damaging factors.
o Archival lamination, which is the process of lining or covering one sheet of document between two sheets of reinforcing material. Lamination is usually used for records that are damaged, brittle, or torn.
o Encapsulation, which is a way of restoring archives by using protective materials to prevent physical damage by coating them with polyester plastic and assisted by the addition of double-sided tape.
o In addition to these several methods, there are also ways to restore archives that are carried out on digital archives. Even so, restoration of digital archives requires special skills.
